I'm just not creative.

Spoiler: You are. But you haven't been looking in the right places.

In partnership with

"Creativity is intelligence having fun."

Albert Einstein

“I could never do what you do. I’m just not creative.”

A client said that to me recently, after seeing a first draft of her new website.

It was a great compliment. But I couldn’t help but feel bad. Like “creativity” is some magical gift bestowed on a lucky few.

Here’s what I told her:

You’re way more creative than you think.

You might not be a designer or a copywriter. But creativity isn’t about job titles. It’s about how you think, how you solve problems, how you connect with people.

If you’ve ever:

  • Made a client laugh during a tough moment

  • Come up with a unique way to explain what you do

  • Improvised an on-the-spot presentation

  • Solved a problem without Googling it first

  • Reimagined a process to make it smoother or more fun

… Congratulations! You most definitely ARE creative.

The problem is, most people think of creativity as something polished or “artsy.” Something that belongs in a portfolio.

But real creativity?

It’s problem-solving with personality.
It’s finding the right analogy to help someone understand.
It’s making order out of chaos.

Here’s the truth: my best creative work has come from just being curious and challenging the “normal” way of looking at things. From letting go of the rules.

For me, playing board games is an amazing way to stay sharp creatively. You get strategy, surprise, storytelling, competition, collaboration — all in one box. And you get to share the experience with friends and family. [ Even better! 🤩 ]

Want to unlock that kind of creative energy in your own business?

Try this:

  • Gather sparks. Collect bits of inspiration — not to copy, but to remix. I keep a massive swipe file of words, visuals, designs, colors, etc. And if you’re looking for an awesome free tool to store your digital inspiration, try MyMind.

  • Play on purpose. Set weird time or tool constraints. Make silly metaphors. Turn your business into a game. Magic often happens when our brains are forced to think differently.

  • Appreciate your superpowers. What unexpected things do people always thank you for? … What off-the-wall questions light you up? … Think of ways to use your unique skills more in your business.

The moral of this story?

You don’t have to be a creative … to be creative. 😉

Tell your AI tool that you’re looking to explore playful, offbeat, and metaphor-rich ways to describe your business. The goal isn’t polish — it’s perspective.

Most businesses don’t fail because of bad ideas. They fail because they sound like everybody else. [ That’s what us marketing folks call “positioning.” ]

My friend and e-commerce growth architect AJ Saunders knows this stuff better than anyone. After years of studying, testing, and refining what actually works, he now helps D2C and CPG brands grow sales, boost profits, and build stronger e-comm businesses.

Victory Points

Albert Einstein probably never created with transparent cards, but he would’ve loved Canvas.

This is a game that makes you feel like an artist — even if your last creative triumph was a decent PowerPoint deck.

In Canvas, you’re layering translucent cards to create beautiful, unique paintings. But this isn’t just art for art’s sake. You’re also solving a puzzle: aligning icons to score against shifting criteria.

Each turn, you draft new elements — maybe a splash of color, a dramatic subject, or a subtle background. You’re composing a painting, yes, but also building toward specific goals: symmetry, color harmony, icon patterns.

The trick? Every card affects multiple scoring areas, so your choices have to be both expressive and strategic.

In other words: creativity meets calculation.

And that’s where this game sings. Canvas captures the spark of innovation, not as wild chaos — but as smart, playful design. It’s the perfect metaphor for what real-world creativity looks like: not random inspiration, but structure, experimentation, and elegant constraints.

Too often, we separate the “creatives” from the “strategists” in business. But true innovation lives at that intersection. It’s not just fun ideas — it’s ideas that work. And often, the best way to get there is by relaxing the rules just enough to play.

Canvas is a great reminder that creativity isn’t fluff. It’s focus in disguise. And when intelligence is having fun, the results are often brilliant.
