Summer Slump

Slow season is actually a gift — if you play it right.

"The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining."

John F. Kennedy

Summer is weird.

Everyone is kind of working … but kind of not.

And I get it. Kids are wrapping up break. Folks are spending their hard-earned vacation time before the weather turns. [ Up north, that is. 😉 ]

It used to cause a work-lull panic meltdown for me.

Now? I’ve learned to embrace it.

Because summer isn’t a problem. It’s an opportunity.

I had a call last week with a prospect who said, "We really want to move forward. But business is kind of slow, so we might wait until it picks up."

Totally fair instinct. But here’s what I shared:

"That’s exactly why you need to do it NOW."

Because when the doors swing open, do you want to be scrambling to update your messaging, patch your website, and rework your offer? …

OR do you want to position your business as the one that’s confidently ready?

They got the message and we’re kicking things off next week. 😉

This same scenario played out big-time during (and after) Covid. Companies slashed their marketing budgets because business was slow. And it felt totally logical at the time.

However, those same companies were horribly unprepared for the post-Covid rebound.

And many of them failed as a result.

Here’s the truth, friends: Slow time is your ideal prep time.

If you want to hit the ground running this fall, here are five strategic moves you need to make NOW:

  1. Polish your presence.
2025 has completely rewritten the digital marketing playbook. You’re no longer being searched online; you’re being verified. Make sure your website, content and branding reflects the very best of what you have to offer … or prospects will just bounce to someone else.

  2. Audit your offers.
Are they still aligned with what your ideal client actually needs? Simplify. Clarify. Get rid of anything that isn’t converting.

  3. Streamline your systems.
What processes feel clunky or manual? Now is the ideal time to clean things up, automate, or templatize. Your future self (and team) will thank you.

  4. Reconnect with past leads.
They might not be ready now — but they will be when Q4 rolls around. A thoughtful follow-up keeps the conversation going.

  5. Create for the future.
Batch social content. Build reusable assets. Lay the groundwork now, so when things speed up, you’re not panicking.

Because when fall hits, the game totally changes.

New budgets open and inboxes are flooded with opportunities that need to get done … like, yesterday.

And if you’ve already done the prep-work?

You won’t just survive the wave — you’ll be the one riding it.

Victory Points

If you’re building a business, a strategy, or even a kingdom, you’ll do best to prepare before disaster strikes.

That’s the heart of Cartographers — a strategic flip-and-write game where your plans are constantly at the mercy of changing seasons and the occasional monster ambush.

You and up to three other royal mapmakers are each handed a blank grid and the king’s decree: draw the most glorious kingdom the land has ever seen.

Each round, a card is flipped from the deck showing a new terrain shape and a choice: do you place forests or farmlands, villages or water? Everyone gets to choose one of the two terrain types and must draw that exact shape somewhere on their map.

The core mechanic is pattern-building under pressure. Each season scores differently, so you’re constantly weighing short-term gains against long-term goals. Maybe this piece fits beautifully now … but what if it blocks you later?

Just when you’ve got a plan, trouble arrives. Monster cards sneak into the deck and, when revealed, force you to pass your map to a neighbor who gleefully scrawls destruction onto your hard work.

These ambushes don’t just mess with your score — they shake your confidence, reminding you why flexibility is as important as vision.

Cartographers rewards foresight. It asks you to stay nimble, leave room for the unexpected, and keep building even when the map doesn’t go your way. Because you can’t stop the monsters, but you can plan for them.

That’s not just game strategy. That’s leadership.

Make it a great week! 🙌
